Caring for Your Sourdough Starter: A Simple Guide

Welcome to the wonderful world of sourdough! If you've been gifted a starter or just made your own, you’re on an exciting journey.

Today, I’ll share some easy-to-follow instructions to help you keep your sourdough starter happy and active, so you can enjoy fresh, homemade bread in no time.

Daily Feeding Instructions

Your sourdough starter needs regular feedings to stay active. Here’s how to feed it each day:

1. What You Need:

   - Unbleached all-purpose flour

   - Warm water

2. Feeding Ratio:

Use a simple 1:1:1 ratio. This means:

   - ½ cup of flour

   - ½ cup of warm water

   - ½ cup of your starter

3. How to Feed:

   - Add the flour and water to your starter.

   - Stir well until everything is fully combined.

   - Cover the jar with a breathable cloth, such as cotton.

Jar Maintenance

To keep your starter healthy, it’s important to change the jar about once a week. As your starter grows, you can gradually increase the amounts of flour and water, maintaining the same 1:1:1 ratio.

Before You Bake

- Active Starter: Feed your starter 6-12 hours before using it in a recipe to ensure it’s bubbly and active.

- Discard: Before each feeding, discard a small portion of the starter. This keeps it fresh and prevents it from becoming too large.

Tips for Success

- Don’t worry if you forget a feeding or two—sourdough starters are forgiving!

- If you’re taking a break from baking, you can store your starter in the fridge and feed it just once a week.
